Secrets of Growing Killer Tomatoes

Tomatoes have always been my favorite garden vegetable to grow and to eat. I have had success with the other standard garden vegetables, such as cucumbers, bell peppers, cauliflower etc. but tomatoes became my specialty over the years.

I start my seeds indoors approximately 5-6 weeks before the last expected frost date. I use a commercially available starting flat that will hold 72 seedlings. I prefer plant the Tomato Park's Whopper(TM) Cr Improved, VFFNT Hybrid which can be ordered from Park Seed Co. This is a large, luscious, disease resistant tomato that I have seen grow to excess of 3lbs.+. It makes for an awesome BLT since a slice of one of these beauties will hang off the toast at least one inch or more all the way around!!!!!

Stuffed Orca

For the potting mixture, I use equal parts of a good quality potting soil and vermiculite that makes the soil light enough so that the seeds will not have difficulty sprouting and growing. I know your probably saying to yourself right now, WOW, 72 tomato plants, I don't need that many, well look at it like this...out of the 72 that you start, some will not develop for whatever reason, and once they are planted, some will die, the birds will get some, the animals will get some and yes, the bugs will get some regardless of how hard your try to keep them out. So out of that 72 plants, you could wind up with just the right number in the end for your garden. Of course it is possible to wind up with 72 very healthy, untouched by animals, disease or bugs, tomato plants, as happened to me one season, then you will have more tomatoes than you can possibly eat, can, sell or give away!!!! But that is a whole 'nother story!!!

I have grown tomatoes in all types of soil, from rocky, hard packed clay to rich dark loam so loose you could push your arm elbow deep into the soil with no effort. It has been my experience that almost any soil will work with most only requiring minor amendments.

If you need to add amendments to your soil to loosen it, I recommend a mixture of aged sawdust and sand in equal parts. The sand can be obtained in bulk from your local concrete company for a small fee or you can buy it in bags from your local hardware store. One note about the sawdust, DO NOT use fresh sawdust, as this is much to hot due to the nitrogen being released during the breakdown process. Plants placed in this sawdust; even with the mix of sand and soil are much to tender to withstand the high concentration of nitrogen.

If fresh sawdust is all that you can obtain, pile it in one corner of your garden and let it age for new season.

Your local sawmill, if you have one close by, should have a good supply of old sawdust on hand that they will let you load up and haul away for free. If you do not have a sawmill or any type of manufacturing facility close by, such as the Ames Co., that makes wooden handles etc. you can check with your local county extension agent and he or she can tell you where you may acquire the sawdust. Speaking of the county extension agent, when you go to consult with the agent, take along some soil samples from different places in your garden and ask that they be tested for the proper nutrients. This is a free service provided by some counties while others may charge a nominal fee, regardless, you can have the results back in just a few days.

Once you have the sawdust and sand, spread equal parts over your garden until it reaches a depth of about one inch or more depending on the type of soil. Too much and the soil will be too loose and the water will drain away to quickly, not enough and the sun will bake it to a hardpan during the dog days of summer.

Work this mixture into your soil as deep as possible using your rotary tiller or the old fashioned way, by using a spading fork or shovel Once this mixture is worked in properly then it is time to consider what type of fertilizer is needed.

Armed with your soil test results, you will have a good indication of what kind of fertilizer is best for your particular garden. In most cases, a good all purpose fertilizer known as Triple 10 or 10-10-10 will do the job very well. Your soil test results will give specifics of any additional nutrients that you may need and should also include coverage rates.

Once you have completed the fertilizing, give your garden a moderate soaking with your sprinkler or hose nozzle to dissolve and distribute the fertilizer through out the soil.

When I begin to set out the tomatoes I have somewhat of a unique approach, I dig the planting hole, approximately 10-12 inches deep with a post hole digger, which also helps to determine the spacing for each plant ( 2-2 ½ feet apart or about ½ the length of the handle of your post hole digger) I use the post hole digger for several reasons:

1. Its much easier on your back, you don't have to bend or kneel to dig the hole.

2. The larger and deeper hole means that more of the tomato plant itself can be placed deeper into the ground and the more plant you can actually place in the ground the stronger the plant will be, because every bit of the seedling that is placed underground will develop into the root system, thereby you will have deeper and stronger roots from the very beginning.

3. The loose backfill in the hole allows for the developing root system to get a firm foothold.

After you have gotten all your holes spaced out and dug, go back and sprinkle just a bit of Miracle-Gro into the bottom of each hole then add just a small amount of water to the hole. Gently remove your seedlings from the flat and place it as deep as possible in the hole. I recommend leaving no more than 1 - 2 inches of tomato above ground. Yes, it will take longer for your tomatoes to produce by doing this as compared to setting them out at that same depth they were in the seeding flat, but you will have stronger plants and plants that virtually never need watering because at that depth moisture is pretty much constant unless it is an extremely dry summer. Believe me, if you set your tomatoes out at the flat depth, you will be watering them at least every other day.!!!

The next thing we need to address is the method used to control the sprawling plant. Some people like to place straw down around their tomato plants and let them sprawl across the ground. I believe this opens the door for more pest problems, such as the tomato hornworm. The method I recommend is using concrete reinforcing wire to make your own tomato cages. The wire can be purchased at most any hardware or do it yourself store. The wire has large 6" openings that you can easily pass your hand through when picking time comes. The wire is about 6 ft high which makes a very sturdy cage for even the biggest tomato plant. To make the cages, count off seven of the squares and then, using a cutting torch or a study pair of wire cutters, cutoff the bottom of the seventh square which will give you six 6" spikes that will make the cage as steady as a rock when they are pushed into the ground. I place my cages around the plants as soon as the plants are in the ground. Once you make the cages they will last of years and years to come.

Our last area of concern is pests and diseases, specifically the tomato hornworm and blossom end rot. The tomato hornworm is nasty little creature that will surround and chew through your plant at just below ground level. To prevent this from happening push a very large nail into the ground right next to each tomato plant. This will prevent the hornworm from surrounding your plant and eating through the base.

If you see the end of your tomatoes beginning to rot as they grow, then it is surely a case of blossom end rot, which can be easily stopped from overtaking your entire tomato crop. Go to your local pharmacy and get some potassium chloride, then place two heaping tablespoons into a garden sprayer and fill with water, shake to mix then spray your plants well. Do this weekly until no new end rot appears.

If you follow this guide and use a little TLC you will have some of the largest and best tasting tomatoes one could ever ask for.

You will definitely be the envy of the entire neighborhood!!!

Mobsters in America - Francis "Two Gun" Crowley - The Puny Killer

They called him a "Half-Pint Moron" and "The Puny Killer." But for a short three-month period, Francis "Two Gun" Crowley was the most dangerous man in New York City.

Crowley was born in New York City on October 13, 1912. His German mother was not married, and as soon as little Francis saw his first light of day, she gave him up for adoption. It was rumored his father was a cop, which explained his hatred for anyone in a blue uniform. He was brought up by a woman named Anna Crowley, and he took her name, calling her his only mother.

Stuffed Orca

By the time Crowley was 18, despite the fact that he stood only five-foot-three inches and weighed 130 pounds, he was already a full-blown criminal, and a murderer. He teamed up with hulking Rudolph "Fats" Duringer, who was said to be the largest man ever to sit in Sing Sing's electric chair, and the Mutt and Jeff crime team soon started terrorizing New York City.

Mobsters in America - Francis "Two Gun" Crowley - The Puny Killer

On February 21, 1931, Crowley, Fats and another unidentified male busted into an America Legion Dance Hall in the Bronx. They were uninvited, and when a slew of Legionnaires tired to toss them out, Crowley began firing with two guns, which gave him his nickname "Two Gun" Crowley. No one was killed, but two men were injured, and Crowley was now hunted by the police for attempted murder. He was cornered in a office building on Lexington Ave, but he shot his way out of arrest, plugging Detective Ferdinand Schaedel.

Crowley continued his crazed crime spree in rapid fashion. First, Crowley and his crew robbed a bank in New Rochelle. Then they staged a home invasion at the West 90th Street apartment of rich real estate investor Rudolph Adler. Crowley shot the feisty Adler five times, and just as he was ready to fire the final bullet into Adler's skull, Adler's dog Trixie went into attack mode and chased Crowley and his crew from the apartment.

In Crowley's first murder involvement, he wasn't even the shooter. On April 27, 1931, Crowley was driving a stolen car with his pal Fats in the backseat. Fats was busy trying to make moves on dance hall girl Virginia Brannen, who had just come along for the ride. Brannen told Fats to keep his hands to himself. This did not please the hulking gangster too much, so he shot her dead. Crowley and Fats discarded a bloodied Brannen outside the St. Joseph Cemetery in Yonkers.

After finding Brannen's dead body, the police put out an all-points bulletin for the big and tiny psychopaths. On April 29, Crowley was driving a green Chrysler on 138 Street in the Bronx, when a passing police car spotted him. The cops sped in hot pursuit after Crowley, firing shot after shot at the speeding Chrysler. Crowley returned fired, and somehow he managed to escape. The next day, the police found Crowley's abandoned car, riddled with bullets and smeared with bloodstains. The manhunt for Crowley continued.

On May 6, Crowley was smooching in a car with his 16-year old girlfriend Helen Walsh, in a secluded spot on Morris Lane, in North Merrick, Long Island. Patrolmen Frederick Hirsch and Peter Yodice approached the car and asked for Crowley's identification. Instead of drawing his wallet, Crowley pulled out a pistol, firing. He shot Hirsch to death and wounded Yodice, before he fled the scene.

Now branded a cop-killer, the daily newspapers brought Crowley instant fame. The New York Daily News wrote: "Francis Crowley, who glories in the nickname Two Gun Frank, and is described by the police as the most dangerous criminal at large, was hunted throughout the city last night."

On May 7th, the police traced Crowley to a top floor apartment on West 90th Street. Crowley was holed up there with Fats Duringer and Helen Walsh, and what transpired next will forever be known as "The Siege on West 90th Street"; the most fierce gun battle in the history of New York City. Two detectives first tried to enter the apartment and take Crowley and his crew away peacefully, but Crowley would have none of that. He screamed through the door, firing lead, "Come and get me coppers."

The detectives retreated down to the street, where they were joined by an estimated one hundred police officers, rushed in from all parts of the city. Crowley yelled down at the assembled cops, "I'm up here. Come and get me."

Over the course of the next several hours, and while an estimated 15,000 onlookers gawked from the streets and open tenement windows, more than 700 bullets were fired into Crowley room. Crowley had an arsenal himself and he brazenly returned fire. Helen Walsh and Fats Duringer reloaded Crowley guns for him, as they hid safely under the bed. At one point, the police cut a hole in the roof and dropped gas canisters into Crowley's room. Crowley calmly picked up the canisters and threw them out the window, overcoming several police officers below. Finally, a dozen cops broke down Crowley's door, and with four slugs in his body, the police were finally able to subdue Crowley. Fats Duringer and Helen Walsh gave up without a whimper.

The newspapers had a field day with this one. Crowley was described as "A Mad Irish Gunman" (even though he was actually German), with "the face of an alter boy." Crowley and Fats were convicted of the murder of Virginia Brannen, and Crowley of the murder of patrolmen Frederick Hirsch. They were both sentenced to die in the Sing Sing electric chair.

In jail, Crowley kept up his tough guy act. He made a club out of a wrapped-up newspaper and some wire from under his bed. Then he tried to fight his way out of prison, by cracking a guard over the head with his handmade club. His escape attempt having failed, Crowley set fire to his cell, then took off all his clothes and stuffed them into his toilet, flooding his cell. For this, Warden Lewis E. Lawes forced Crowley to sit naked in his cell for several days, until the young maniac quieted down.

On his last days on earth, Crowley mellowed a bit. A bird flew into his cell and he nurtured it. He also began drawing pictures, for which he had more than a little talent for.

On December 10, 1931, Fats Duringer got the juice first. After Fats and Crowley hugged a last goodbye, and Fats started his last lonely trek down the hall to the chair, Crowley told a guard, "There goes a great guy, a square shooter and my pal."

Crowley was not so charitable to Walsh, whom he refused to see, even though she visited the prison almost every day. "She's out!" he told the newspapers, "She's going around with a cop! I won't look at her!"

On January 21, 1932, Crowley followed the same path to the electric chair that his old pal Fats had traveled. After the black leather mask was pulled over his face, Crowley's last words were, "Send my love to my mother." The lever was thrown and Francis "Two Gun" Crowley was executed at the tender age of nineteen.

2 Great Penguin Preschool Activities

Penguins have always been an interest to preschool children. The distinctive penguin waddle is a sight to see as well as their characteristic tuxedo type body. Penguins are so popular with preschool children that the "March of the Penguins" movie was a huge success. Therefore, penguin preschool activities are sure to hit a high note with preschool children.

Penguin preschool activities are fun to do in the winter when there is snow on the ground, but can be done anytime of the year. Read on to learn about two penguin preschool activities that are a waddling good time.

Stuffed Orca

Learn About Penguins

2 Great Penguin Preschool Activities

The first of the penguin preschool activities is to learn about penguins by reading a penguin story and having the preschool children act as penguins in dramatic play.

You will need the following materials for this penguin preschool activity: the book "Penguin Pete" by Marcus Pfister and pictures of penguin clipped from magazines such as National Geographic.

It may be helpful to find a stuffed animal penguin as well to allow the children to have a closer, hands-on look at penguins.

Begin this penguin preschool activity by having the preschool children sit on the floor ready for story time. Waddle into the story circle. The children may laugh or ask why you are waddling. Have them guess why you are waddling.

Explain that this is how penguins walk. Ask the preschool children what they know about penguins. Where do penguins live? Why do penguins waddle? Read the book "Penguin Pete" to the preschool children allowing them to ask questions during the reading.

Pass pictures of penguins (and the penguin stuffed animal as well if you have one) around to the children and ask them to describe the colors and characteristics of penguins. Finish this activity by having the children waddle around the classroom and pretend they are penguins during dramatic play.

Tracing Animal Shapes

The second of the penguin preschool activities involves tracing animal shapes. The children will create penguin pictures of their own while working on the fine motor skills involved in tracing. You will need the following materials for this penguin preschool activity: tracing paper, pencils, crayons and pictures of penguins to use as tracing guides.

Begin the activity by asking preschool children if they have ever drawn a penguin. What does a penguin look like? Pass out the tracing paper, pencils, crayons, and pictures of penguins.

Demonstrate how to place the tracing paper on the penguin picture and trace along the lines of the penguin body. Show the preschool children how to color the parts of the penguin body that should be black. Allow the children to work on tracing. Have the children name their penguins. Post the penguin pictures around the classroom or on the refrigerator at home.

An optional activity would be to watch the highly popular "March of the Penguins" movie during class time. It may be difficult to keep the attention of the preschool children for very long, so you can watch snippets of the movie from time to time.

You can also pause the movie and discuss various facts about penguins. You could have the "March of the Penguins" as a Friday movie treat and consume popcorn and healthy snacks while watching the movie. The preschool children will love to "go to the movies" in their very home classroom or home.

How to Create Killer Layouts That Dance Off the Page - Three Secrets Every Scrapbooker Should Know

The other day my great-grand-daughter brought me a scrapbook she had made. She's twelve, but I think she's pretty talented. Her pages showed a great use of color, the scrapbook was lively and fun, but it wasn't great, she knew it and came to ask me why. Here's what I told her. There are three 'secrets' I use when creating killer layouts.

1. When you start scrapbooking it's easy to treat each page as though it's on it's own. Personally I love background papers. I used to spend lots and lots buying sheets whenever I saw one that caught my eye until I had drawers stuffed with them Of course when you open a scrapbook and get past the first page, you're actually looking at two pages, so that's my first secret. If you design your pages so that it looks like one BIG layout using BOTH pages, then it looks a lot better than two small pages next to each other. The easiest way to do this is to plan the thing as a whole in the first place, and never buy scrapbook papers in ones, buy two matching papers as a minimum. Actually lots of scrapbooks look best if you have a theme or colour-scheme to continue throughout the book, so the best idea is to buy your scrapbook papers in larger amounts, or buy one of those themed books where there are lots of papers to mix and match. The theme helps your layouts pop right off the page.

Stuffed Orca

2. It's really easy to get carried away when you are scrapbooking. There are so many fun things to try out, from background papers to rub ons, tags, ribbons, bows, charms the list is really endless. It's lots of fun to put lots and lots on a page, but not only is it expensive, it can get too busy and easily overwhelm the pictures. My number two secret is to know when to stop. Sometimes less is more. Every time you decide to add something look carefully at the layout before. Then put the item in place and look again. Unless you are absolutely certain it looks better, forget it. Scrapbooking is really about memories. The items we add are supposed to add to the recreation of an event we are preserving. I did one scrapbook a while ago where I used a dragonfly theme. I love dragonflies and butterflies, but in this case I used the theme because it was a scrapbook of a holiday we spent in England and one of hte features was the large number of dragonflies we saw. It looks great, but it also helps preserve the memory, it's not JUST a decoration.

3. Because scrapbooks are about memories (that's why some people call them memory books) there are some things you must never leave out. Without journalling a scrapbook isn't a scrapbook, it's a photograph album. And that's secret number three. Don't forget the journalling. A friend of mine showed be the album she had made for her new baby. Lots of lovely baby pictures, decorations, a tiny clock showing the time of birth, ribbons etc. But no names. I've seen so many newborn babies in my time. All adorable in their own way, but even when they are your own, they are remarkably similar. I know my granddaughter tells the difference between pictures of her two (as newborns) by looking at their shawls. One was white, the other ivory. The truth is that even a mother can have problems telling babies apart many years after the event. And that's the thing with scrapbooks. You know who and what everything is NOW, when you make them, but in 5, 10, 20 years? Will you remember all the names? Journaling is what will make your scrapbooks something to hand down to your children, grandchildren and beyond. They need to understand that whatever problems they have in life you had them too, and you got by. Don't let them have a scrapbook that shows grandma and grandpa as pictures in a book, use your journalling to give them a living, breathing family with a wealth of experience and memories to bring comfort and inspiration when they need it.

New York's Most Famous Serial Killer - David Berkowitz

The story of this famous serial killer has a bit of a personal twist.

It was late summer, 1976. As a twenty-one year old I was not really into or much aware of the news of the day outside of local news. I was planning a trip to visit a friend in New York City and a co-worker asked me if I would drive her to her parents condo in Queens. I agreed.

The three hour trip was fairly normal as we talked about work and other things. We finally got to the condo complex and I parked the car a little bit away from the main entrance. It was very dark and hot as it was about midnight on the 80 degree summer night.

New York's Most Famous Serial Killer - David Berkowitz

As I was getting out the car, my co-worker took a woolen ski cap out of her purse and stuffed her long flowing brown hair up into the cap and firmly secured it on her head. I thought this rather funny and asked what she was doing. It was only then that I heard about the Son of Sam who was currently terrorizing that very neighborhood. I tried to act bravely as I walked her to her parents unit. Her father and mother told me more stories about the Son of Sam over the next hour. Now after 2am, I was totally paranoid walking, or should I say running, to my car. I'll never forget that night. It was then that I started to read everything I could about the Son of Sam.

The Son of Sam murderer was born Richard David Falco in 1953. Soon after birth he was adopted by Nathan and Pearl Berkowitz and his name was forever changed to David Richard Berkowitz.

Berkowitz was an average student, joined the Army in 1971, was honorably discharged in 1974 and joined a cult that sacrificed German shepherds in 1975.

Berkowitz would spend the majority of 1976 and 1977 terrorizing New York with murdering six and wounding seven others during the course of eight shootings.

Chronologically, the first incident took place on July 29, 1976 when two women, Jody Valenti and Donna Lauria, were shot while talking in a parked car. Valenti survived but Lauria died instantly.

Carl Denaro and Rosemary Keenan were shot while sitting in a parked car on October 23 of that year. Both survived. Then on November 26th Donna DeMasi and Joanne Lomino were walking together at night when Berkowitz came up from behind them and shot them. Lomino was paralyzed for life and DeMasi survived.

A pattern was developing but the police still had no suspect. The City's newspapers were getting very critical of the investigation. They had labeled the shooter as the .44 caliber killer because all of the bullets came from a .44 caliber Bulldog.

On January 30, 1977 Christine Freund and her fiance John Diel were shot as they sat in a parked car. Christine died and John Diel survived the attack. Five weeks later on March 8th, Virginia Voskerichian, a college honor student was shot and killed while walking home from school.

Then on April 17, 1977 the .44 caliber killer raised the stakes. Valentina Suriani and her 20-year-old boyfriend Alexander Esau, were both shot twice. Both died.

But Berkowitz left a letter addressed to the lead investigator. Here is the text of the actual letter with all of its misspellings:

Dear Captain Joseph Borrelli,

I am deeply hurt by your calling me a wemon hater. I am not. But I am a monster. I am the 'Son of Sam.' I am a little brat.

When father Sam gets drunk he gets mean. He beats his family. Sometimes he ties me up to the back of the house. Other times he locks me in the garage. Sam loves to drink blood.

'Go out and kill,' commands father Sam.

'Behind our house some rest. Mostly young - raped and slaughtered - their blood drained - just bones now.

Papa Sam keeps me locked in the attic too. I can't get out but I look out the attic window and watch the world go by.

I feel like an outsider. I am on a different wavelength then everybody else - programmed too kill.

However, to stop me you must kill me. Attention all police: Shoot me first - shoot to kill or else keep out of my way or you will die!

Papa Sam is old now. He needs some blood to preserve his youth. He has had too many heart attacks. 'Ugh, me hoot, it hurts, sonny boy.'

I miss my pretty princess most of all. She's resting in our ladies house. But I'll see her soon.

I am the 'Monster' - 'Beelzebub' - the chubby behemouth.

I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game - tasty meat. The wemon of Queens are prettyist of all. It must be the water they drink. I live for the hunt - my life. Blood for papa.

Mr. Borrelli, sir, I don't want to kill anymore. No sur, no more but I must, 'honour thy father.'

I want to make love to the world. I love people. I don't belong on earth. Return me to yahoos.

To the people of Queens, I love you. And I want to wish all of you a happy Easter. May

God bless you in this life and in the next.

And for now I say goodbye and goodnight. Police: Let me haunt you with these words: I'll be back! I'll be back! To be interpreted as - bang bang bang, bank, bang - ugh!! Yours in murder, Mr. Monster

It was the first time the term "Son of Sam" was used and the press picked up on it big time. At the peak of this killing spree there were over 200 police detectives assigned to the case. The city was in a panic. The police had more clues but they still couldn't piece them all together to find a solid suspect.

There would be two more shootings before it all ended. On June 26th Judy Placido and Sal Lupu were shot while leaving a disco. Both survived. And finally, on July 31, 1977, Bobby Violante and Stacy Moskowitz were shot in the car while parked at a lover's lane. Stacy died from a gunshot wound to her head and Bobby lost vision in one eye and partial vision in the other eye.

David Berkowitz was eventually caught after receiving a parking ticket at the time and near the place of the Moskowitz murder. That evidence led police to his door. When he was arrested he immediately surrendered to police and identified himself as Sam.

He pleaded not guilty and received a 365-year sentence and stands today as New Your City's most Famous Serial Killer.

My Pillow Pets Splashy Whale

One animal that you do not see a lot of stuffed animals of would be whales. There are probably a lot of reasons for this, but they are an animal that some children really like. That has led to companies like My Pillow Pets creating a My Pillow Pets Splashy Whale. This fun item is becoming really popular with children because of its great looks, and it uniqueness. Here is the basic information you will need to know about this item to decide if you would be interested in purchasing one or not.

For starters, the look of this item is fantastic. The body is mostly black with a couple of white patches on it. It has some nice looking fins and a smiling face that kids seem to like. The material it is made from is also very important. It is made from a very soft plush material which kids love, and it also makes this item very soft and cuddly. Those are two things kids love to see in a stuffed animal.

Stuffed Orca

The big thing that kids love about My Pillow Pets is that they can be both a pillow pet and a stuffed animal at the same time. This occurs because of some Velcro on the bottom of the stuffed animal which when attached creates the stuffed animal look. When that Velcro is undone, the stuffed animal instantly turns into a flat pillow that children love to use. This is a simple but unique concept that has really garnered a lot of support, and made these items very popular.

Pacifier? Or, Killer?

This horrible happening was known to occur when I began my practice in 1960 and still happens today, in 2010. The cause is unrecognized. Some have blamed suffocation, following the use of pacifiers.

Early in the sixties, I had two such deaths: The first was a three-month old baby from Washington Township. I made an emergency house call to the home and found a dead baby in its crib. That baby had four or five pacifiers in the crib, and one was still hanging from the baby's mouth. There was some nasal discharge as well.

I examined the pacifiers. Each pacifier -- nipple, flange and handle -- was made of rubber. The nipples appeared to have elongated, likely secondary to boiling with hot water.

In my view, this was a baby who had a cold that clogged the nose, used a pacifier with a nipple long enough to reach and obstruct the opening at the back of the throat, and could not release the pacifier because there were no air holes in the rubber, lip-sealing flange. I believed that suffocation was the cause of death.

Until fairly recently, pacifiers were made in that way. Further, if an infant happened to have a cold, and the nose was stuffed, there would be no way for air to reach the lungs.

That design hadn't changed when I began my pediatric practice in the sixties; crib deaths were far more frequent then, than they are today.

Because of the first crib death experience, I began to warn mothers in the practice to avoid the use of pacifiers. One mother became incensed and left the office in anger. It was that mother, who weeks later, screamed for a house call.

Her baby was dead in its crib -- but with no pacifier within sight. I simply said, "What happened to the pacifiers?" Mom answered angrily, "I took them out, but they had nothing to do with this!"

And finally, it may be of importance that, in the following forty years of practice, with warnings to parents on the use of pacifiers, and changes in the construction of pacifiers, I never again witnessed a "crib death."

Times have changed. Now let us describe the vastly improved design of a modern pacifier: It has a short nipple and large air openings in the flange, so that the pacifier cannot readily seal the lips -- causing the baby with a stuffed nose to suffocate!
